Description

This was a commission, and I was trying to think more ‘out of the box ‘ for the client. The door in its ancient glory was the primary image, and only well into the painting did I add the violin, as a human factor. During the painting, I was listening to Paganini, hence the inspiration and the name of the painting.

Doors are suggestive of many things: imprisonment, freedom, closings, endings, refusals, new beginnings, and may even guard secrets. I feel this door is welcoming. The glow inside is alluring, irresistible…

The colour blue is one of my favourite colours. It is striking and a comfort colour. It displays inner peace, and serenity. I particularly like the decay of the building and the deterioration of the door, suggesting that life carries-on in dilapidated forms and the violin: pristine, in perfect condition.

My choice of the violin added sound to the image.
