Description
During our cooler months June to December the Southern Right Whales and Humpback Whales migrate to our coastal waters in South Africa. They come to calve and to mate.
Considering, I have painted a lot of our wildlife in my garden and ocean, for example the vervet monkeys, seashells, and the birds – the Hadeda. So, I was honour bound to paint the magnificent whales in our ocean view.
The Southern Right Whales lack a dorsal fin. They have a large, flat back. They are dark grey and have bumps called callosities on their head. Their gestation period is 12 months.
Whales lob-tail to attract the opposite sex and to aggressively ward off males or just to communicate with other whales. During still, sea quiet nights we can hear them slapping the water!
Whales have a special place in most people’s hearts. ☺
