Description

I had attended an online course on How to Paint a Rose in 2019. Somehow, I didn’t agree with the tutor. She was suggesting a technique that I didn’t enjoy. My rose was appalling. My colours were garish. I loathed the picture. The picture drifted around my studio for a while. One day, I decided to mix a good black, and paint over it with lavish palette knife strokes. I painted thickly, hoping the dazzling rose would not be seen again!

While I was painting things seemed to be happening on the canvas and I noticed that there were shapes and an interesting form appeared. When I saw it looked like a person, I decided to put a frock on her and give her an umbrella… and the new painting seemed to miraculously appear.

It lives with a friend who got me interested in painting after forty years of motherhood, entertaining and working. I’m grateful to her.
