Description

A grandmother’s love – the Nebula I

Having accepted the challenge to paint a grandmother’s love and not a typical portrait of a grandchild. My mind went wandering and I explored growth, drawings of my beloved ancient baobabs, human development, biological processes, and foetuses. Thoughts, perhaps, went a ‘bit’ far and then I started thinking of outer space. (My fascination and obsession.) A wonderment of gargantuan proportions.

The love of a grandchild is an astonishing feeling, it is gigantic, it is unfathomable. How can one’s (once infant) child produce their own child? The vastness of the feeling, and size of bewilderment is the magnitude of a gaseous, cloudy, nebula. It is as incomprehensible as the existence of a nebula. It occurs, but one cannot touch it. It is 5000 light years away. (Light years as in a unit of length, and not time.)

However, the freedom and colourful power I had while painting this, gave me an immense amount of pleasure.

There will be more paintings on this topic.

Savour my souvenirs of space.
