Shad Rock was a commission. The commission was requested by the fisherman in the red jacket.
I hadn’t painted a painting of this size before. I also felt I hadn’t painted a proper seascape before, a seascape exploring every aspect of the ocean: the waves, the sandy shore, the wet sand, the batten lace frothy deposits, the curl of the waves, the colour of the ocean at different depths, the rocks, the wet rocks and the rocks covered with moss, all to be captured on one canvas.
The fisherman visited me weekly to check on my progress.
Every brushstroke was enjoyment.
